Research demonstrates that socially connected older adults experience better balance, mobility, spatial awareness, and health. Socially isolated older adults are more likely to fall due to their reduced activity, weakened muscle strength, and depression. Older adults may also avoid situations where they feel vulnerable to falls. When individuals do so, the resulting social isolation and loneliness can potentially accelerate physical and cognitive decline. Evidence-based falls prevention programs are increasingly recognized as effective in also addressing social isolation and loneliness of participants.
ACL's Commit to Connect initiative is hosting a webinar on how falls prevention programming can be a powerful intervention for maintaining and rebuilding social networks. Speakers will share the role of falls prevention programs in addressing social isolation and loneliness and how they are scaling their impact. The webinar will include brief speaker presentations with time for audience Q&A.
