At Transit Planning 4 All’s Town Halls on Transportation Accessibility, participants shared their experiences with inclusion and advocacy in transportation planning. Attendees were asked five questions around transit planning and inclusion and responded with examples from their personal or professional experience.
Toolkits for Inclusive Planning
- US DOT Transportation Toolkit. The Transportation Toolkit is geared toward members of the public who wish to learn how to engage in the transportation decision-making process at the local, regional, state and federal levels.
- Participatory Approaches to Planning Community Interventions from the University of Kansas. This particular section of the Community Tool Box, a global resource for free information on essential skills for building healthy communities, teaches how to use an approach that allows everyone who has a stake in the intervention to have a voice, either in person or by representation.
- Inclusive Planning in Tribal Communities: Engaging People with Disabilities in Designing Safe and Accessible Transportation Systems from America Walks
This white paper presents research into the extent to which people with disabilities are currently included in tribal planning processes and recommendations for making those processes more inclusive. - Hopelink’s Inclusive Planning Toolkit. As part of the 2018-2019 Transit Planning 4 All Grantee Cohort, Hopelink (King County, WA) created an Inclusive Planning Toolkit, a compilation of lessons learned from Hopelink and the King County Mobility Coalition’s participation in the grant. It includes tips for how to bring the inclusive planning process into your organization.
- GPCOG: Community Transportation Leaders Program Handbook. The CTL Program is a gateway to meaningful involvement by underrepresented communities in decision-making about the transportation system. The success of the program in Greater Portland, Maine – demonstrated through policy, systems, and environmental changes – is the result of an intentional approach that is equal parts skill-building, relationship-building, and opportunity-creation.
