Today our country honors the men and women who have served in the military. We celebrate and express our appreciation for all they have done to defend our country and promote freedom and democratic ideals around the world.
More than ten percent of our staff at ACL have worn a military uniform at some point in their lives. Some of them served for a few years, others retired after a full military career, and still others fall somewhere in between. Some are still serving.

As the calendar turns to November, we celebrate National Family Caregivers Month – an opportunity for communities across the country to come together to support and recognize the contributions and sacrifices made on a daily basis by family caregivers of all ages. Family caregivers are the heart and soul of our nation’s long-term care system. They represent an estimated 80 percent of the long-term care in the United States provided by family and other unpaid caregivers. Their support allows countless older adults and people with disabilities to remain fully engaged in their communities.

Diabetes is among the most common chronic diseases experienced by older adults. More than 30 million Americans have diabetes, reflecting 9.4% of the U.S. population. This figure increases with age, with diabetes affecting 25.2% of adults aged 65 and older (National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2017).

All month ACL has been celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) with a variety of events and by sharing resources. NDEAM offers us a chance to recognize the many contributions of workers with disabilities and recommit ourselves to increasing employment opportunities for all people with disabilities.

Throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we mourn the loss of victims of domestic violence, support the resiliency of survivors, and spread the message that healthy relationships are not violent. At the Administration for Community Living (ACL), our mission is to promote individuals’ independence, health, and wellbeing through our programs for older adults and persons with disabilities—and the right to live free from violence is a central tenet of that mission.

On October 18, 2018, leaders and pioneers from the disability research field gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the National Institute for Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). NIDILRR’s mission is to generate new knowledge and to promote its effective use to improve the abilities of individuals with disabilities to perform activities of their choice in the community, and to expand society’s capacity to provide full opportunities and accommodations for its citizens with disabilities.

ACL has awarded a supplemental grant for $70,000 to the National Ombudsman Resource Center (NORC) to address two critical issues in long-term care facility settings, involuntary discharges and opioids.
